World Economic Forum - Technology Report

The Report stresses the importance of ICT as a catalyst for growth in the current global turmoil

Denmark and Sweden once again lead the rankings of The Global Information Technology Report 2008-2009, released for the eighth consecutive year by the World Economic Forum. The United States follows suit, up one position from last year, thus confirming its pre-eminence in networked readiness in the current times of economic slowdown. Singapore (4), Switzerland (5) and the other Nordic countries together with the Netherlands and Canada complete the top 10.

The Report underlines that good education fundamentals and high levels of technological readiness and innovation are essential engines of growth needed to overcome the current economic crisis. Under the theme “Mobility in a Networked World”, this year’s Report places a particular focus on the relationship and interrelations between mobility and ICT.

With record coverage of 134 economies worldwide, the Report remains the world’s most comprehensive and authoritative international assessment of the impact of ICT on the development process and the competitiveness of nations.

The Report is produced by the World Economic Forum in cooperation with INSEAD, the leading international business school, and is sponsored by Cisco Systems.

Sharing CNO experience

Dear all,

I will tell my CNO story and how everything started 4 years ago. I strongly encourage you to do the same here.

I have been always working in international business and marketing in my corporate career. However, I´ve always felt that there was something missing.

When I saw the dawn of social networks businesses, I immediately knew that was the line of business I should pursue for my lifetime from that moment on.

Once, I posted in a forum about having a CNO inside corporations. The response was overwhelming. I knew I had hit something that could become big.

I wrote an article entitled "CNO, the future leader" which was published in a very prestigous Brazilian magazine named Mundo PM, Jun/Jul 2007. It was the cover article and the magazine broke its sales record.

Then, I translated this article into both English and Spanish and added 3 paragraphs in the topic "Responsibilities" on Wikipedia (English version). Since then, it has been there without further modifications.

Meantime, I met Selma Prodanovic via social networks and learnt about her women CNO meetings in Europe. I humbly contributed to her book about social media and its impact in the new corporate management. The book will be lauched in April 2009. Stay tuned!

I also created a full portfolio around CNO concept and business networks methodology.

Getting more international, I presented the CNO concept at Think Tomorrow in Brussels in June 2008.

Besides training and coaching, I have been running my own social network - TEN - Top Executives Net - for two year now and have created a calendar of TEN Happy-Hours in Rio.

How about you?

Looking forward to learning from you too.

Best regards,

Social Media Numbers

Please check this white paper The Truth is in the Social Media Numbers.

Looking forward to hearing your comments.

What object better represents relationships?

A crystal vase, in my opinion
(talking about the true thing only)

They are carefully made
Very special and delicate
A masterpiece

They are like no other
They can not be copied
They are unique

Although we may think
they are commodities
and can be easily found
Not at all

Take care of your relationships
They may look strong
But they are very fragile
indeed

Never ever risk them
Avoid any damage
Once it is broken
It might be forever lost

They are your way
towards lifetime wealth
Treat them with excellence
And life will take care of you

What object better represents life?

In my humble opinion: conventional photo rolls
Why?

When you are born,
God gives you a certain time on earth
You do not know for how long you will stay
Nobody does

As if God gives you one of these rolls and says
"This is your life
Go and get the best out of it
Build, love, cry, smile,
Have fun, make the difference
Be yourself, Laugh,
Develop new relations
and come back later
to show me what you got"

God is always generous
However, for some of us
He gives a 12-photo film
These fellows will have
just a short period of time
to do something

Others are luckier
They will have a 24-photo film
These will have more time
to create a legacy

The great majority of us
Will receive a 36-photo film
We will have time to live
a normal and great life

Finally, God will allow another minority
to stay far long enough
in order to go beyond
in order to live an extraordinary life

Life is always related to time
Time is all what we get in common
While we are still around
Poor or rich

At the end
We will come back to God
With a developed film
or even a numbe of
photo albuns to show

As long as we are here
Let´s make friends,
Develop people,
Love one another,
Strenght relationships

Clean our hearts
Be proud of ourselves
Life is a blessing
We deserve the best of it

Carpe Diem!

Introducing the CNO Position into Large Corporations

Smaller companies and start-ups can get the biggest, most-immediate impact by adding a CNO. The smaller and the more flexible the organization is in order to adopt a new leadership style, the better it is for a CNO position to be quickly deployed at the early stages.

However, it does not mean that it cannot be done in more complex, mature and global corporations. It certainly can. As a matter of fact, it very much depends on the leadership level of that specific organization at that moment.

On the one hand, if the leadership is old-fashioned and typically top-down with a “just-do-it-or-you-are-fired” style, then it is better not even investing that much given that this kind of company may not survive in the long run, regardless of how well positioned they are today. Unless, a dramatic change in top management could happen.

On the other hand, if the company has been preparing new leaders, already providing coaching to key managers, and moving from a conservative management approach to a more modern “management from within,” then this company is a serious candidate to implement the CNO concept and Business Networks Management methodology successfully.

Interesting enough, based on our experience so far, everything starts with who I call “the shining eyes executive.” Normally, this professional has been around for a while, knows the organization fairly well, he/she is respected by his/her peers and is a “out-of-box” thinker. He/she reads some articles about CNOs and thought to him/herself “I am a naturally born CNO but I have never realized it until now”. Of course, the CNO position is quite unique in the world and the corporate environment is not completely aware of it....yet.

Normally, this professional comes out of the human / business area, i.e., marketing, sales, business development, international business, strategic alliances and the likes. Then, this professional approach HR staff requesting for this type of training. We can start very light with just 90-minute speaking to a large audience. It this case, the idea is to identify potential CNOs and Business Networks Managers who will react very positively to this invitation. Alternatively, we can organize two-day workshops with a small team of 10-20 executives. The training can be presented both ways: face-to-face or virtually.

Depending on the size of the organization, some additional training and/or coaching sessions must be considered, mainly if there is a need for regional roll-out. Internal communication of all achievements is a key success factor in the quick adoption and healthy deployment of this methodology across the whole corporation. It's an ongoing process in which the senior executives will always coach their junior colleagues in order to be seamlessly aligned in the corporate value, vision, mission and business principles.

Enjoy the road!

Elite Networker Study

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- When the pink slip arrives or necessity calls for a job change, most professionals reluctantly start networking, but those who network consistently instead of as needed earn much more and are better protected finds a new study from Upwardly Mobile, Inc. with the assistance of the Graziadio School of Business Management at Pepperdine University. Among the findings:

  1. Elite professionals earning more than $200,000 a year, more so than other respondents, cited networking as important to their careers and self-reported a greater networking ability. They leverage their network more, use job sites less, and consider networking a lifestyle rather than a tool to be used when needed.
  2. Thirty-one percent of elite high-earning professionals versus 19% of the non-elites spend one to two hours each week networking.
  3. Twenty-nine percent of the non-elite network only when there is a need versus 18% of the elites.
  4. Fifty-seven percent of elite professionals say job sites have no impact on their career advancement while less than 35% of those in the non-elites felt job sites have no impact.
  5. More than 80% say networking impacts income. Fifty-eight percent believe a skilled networker could see up to a 100% increase in income.
  6. Forty percent of respondents said networking is how they found their current job.
  7. The highest earners said the single most critical factor in determining the value of their network isn't the depth of their relationship with contacts or the size of their network, but breadth of connections with the right contacts--contacts willing to recommend them.
  8. Among the online network management tools used by respondents, LinkedIn is seven times more popular than its nearest contender.

"What surprised us was that most people use networking as a one-time reaction to unemployment or a recession instead of long-term protection that can smooth career transitions," says Promise Phelon, CEO of Upwardly Mobile, Inc. "It's clear that a regular, purposeful networking habit, not just a profile on your favorite professional networking site, will lead to greater mobility and downside protection during tough economic times."
